All our Eco-courses are conducted by our English Biologist Jenifer Matthews. She is our Conservation Manager at Scandinavian Dive Team. All courses are conducted on Liveaboard in Similan Islands. You will gain extensive knowledge about the reef and marinelife during this course and your diving will never be the same!

Course: INTRODUCTION TO MARINE BIOLOGY

This 5 day course is a fully comprehensive conservation course which teaches about the principles of marine ecology, conservation, resource management and reef monitoring. The course includes certification in both SSI Ecological Monitoring Programme and PADI Marine Resource Management Specialities. The course also includes training in the international coral health monitoring programme, CoralWatch.


Eco Objective

The SSI Ecological Monitoring Program teaches you in depth aquatic identification skills and underwater surveying techniques essential to contribute to conservation research. The Marine Resource Management course teaches you all about the marine ecosystem and local and global impacts affecting it. this program is meant to improve your environmental awareness and provide you with the knowledge and experience to impart this on fellow divers and snorkelers.


What do I need to start?

You have to already have completed the Open Water Diver Course with either SSI or PADI. Big Blue provides all equipment, boat trips, etc.


How long will it take?

The course takes five days to complete.


Typical diary

Day One - The Ecology and Biology of Coral Reefs including a discovery night dive

Day Two - What's wrong with coral reefs and what can be done about it. Discovery dive at the coral nursery at Aow Leuk.

Day Three - Coral reef management issues: A diver's perspective. Discovery dive at Koh Tao's BioRock.

Day Four - Discovery morning deep dive, and design and construct your own coral nursery

Day Five - Promoting sustainable diving practices and raising awareness through education, advocacy and fundraising.
