Scuba Diving season, divesites and marinelife in Koh Tao - Thailand

The more we dive in Koh Tao, the more we realize how privileged we are to witness this richness in marine life. The coral reef is in constant growth and development to adapt. During winter when the water temperature drops a bit we get our awesome Bull sharks back in Chumphon Pinnacles. In April-May its Whale Shark season. Even whales visit our dive sites on occasion. In Koh Tao you never know what expect to find under the surface.

Koh Tao's Dive Season

On Koh Tao we dive more or less all year round. The visibility rarely gets lower than 20 meters and the water is comfortably warm, around 30 degrees Celsius. October and November is generally a bit rainy, but it is still possible to dive at this time of year. It is always possible to do your PAD/SSII scuba diving course on Koh Tao, no matter what the weather is like. You can dive every day all year roundwith Scandinavian Diveteam.

JANUARY TO MAY
These months are wonderfully influenced by the high amount of little fish offspring - literally millions of miniature colorful juveniles each more amazing than you can imagine. The newly hatched little fish huddle up together in huge fish balls along walls and drop off where they are constantly chased by Jacks, barracuda and trevally + a fascinating drama of life and death.
The Trigger fish is also very much alive during this nesting period, when it fiercely defends its territory and randomly attacks other fish and divers alike. There’s is no shame in hiding behind your instructor!

APRIL TO OCTOBER
Anything can happen. The biggest fish of the sea, the Whale Shark is a frequent visitor at Sail Rock, Chumphon, Southwest Pinnacle and Shark Island. If you are lucky enough to see this fabulous creature, you will never forget!

THE REST OF THE YEAR

Big shoals of Barracuda and Giant 'Potato Groupers' on Chumphon and Southwest, The caves at Lam Thien and Green Rock are phenomenal to swim through. Night diving at White Rock is a virtual thriller with 'Giant Barracudas' that will hunt what you shine your torch on and 'Blue spotted Stingrays' that dances around in your light. Yes diving on Koh Tao is Excellent.

Koh Tao Dive sites - Must See!


The dive sites you really should make sure to see during your visit in Koh Tao are the big underwater rock formations, Chumphon Pinnacles, and Green Rock as well as Twins and White Rock. Other sublime dive sites are Shark Island, famous for its impressive diversity in fish species, Laem Thien famous for its tunnels and little caves.

Divesite ->> Chumphon Pinnacle

Around 11 km northwest of Koh Tao is one of our most popular dive sites - Chumphon Pinnacle. It has one main pinnacle and other smaller ones around it. They mount from depths of approximately 35 meters up until about 15 meters. Here you will find an underwater plateau, full of soft corals and a fish life with the great pelagic species such as tuna, trevally, jacks, barracuda, marlin and sharks. It’s a bonus when we receive visits from whale shark, one thing the dive site is particularly famous for.

Divesite ->> Shark Island

Shark Island is a rock island named from its shape which is a bit like a sharks back fin and it lies south east of 'Koh Tao. Every side of the island offers different types of marine life, so in effect this is two dive sites in one. On the east side you’ll find soft corals and sponge corals, where as you’ll find hard coral formations on the Westside where we see moray eel, nudi branchs and on occasion a leopard shark.

Divesite ->> Twins

his dive site is near Koh Nang Yuan, starts 5 meters under the surface, goes down to 18 meters and consists of two main rock formations covered with corals and life. Twin Peaks or "Twins" is an ideal site for beginners because of its depth and light currents. The rocks are surrounded by white sand and there is plenty to see everywhere.

Divesite ->> White Rock

Several giant granite boulders make out this dive site, White Rock and is surrounded by enormous coral reefs around 10 meters, There’s a buzzing marine life with butterfly fish, Angelfish. Blue spotted stingrays and turtles are often seen here. It’s a popular site for Night Dives with feather starts and giant barracudas on the hunt.

Divesite ->> Red Rock

Red Rock is also called Nang Yuan Pinnacle. It starts at about 2 meters and drop down to 22 meters. The rocks themselves are not the main attraction, but the little hollow passages along the coast are. The entrance to these you’ll find by swimming west towards Koh Nang Yuan.

Current: Occasionally, but mild
Time to sail there: 10 min

Divesite ->> Sail Rock

Many consider this the best dive site in the Thai Golf. Sail Rock sticks 45 meter above the surface and drops down to 35 meters below. It’s situated between Koh Tao and Koh Pha-ngan, and is famous for its natural chimney which starts at 6meters and has an exit at 18 meters. It also attracts many of the large pelagic species incl. Chevron barracuda, mackerel, jacks, tuna, yes, even Whalesharks drop by occasionally.

Currents: mild
Time to sail there: 60 min on speedboat
Best months: April/May

Divesite ->> Green Rock

Thus site offers several small caves and swim through where you can find marine life that’s seeking shelter from the currents. The rock formations start at around 5 meters and go down to about 32 meters. There is often a bit of current that you can drift with around the pinnacles. This place is not recommended for inexperienced divers. You are guaranteed to see Titan and Yellow Margin Trigger fish because this dive sites is one of their favorite nesting grounds.

Koh Tao's Marine life

On Koh Tao we dive all year round, but what you’ll find under the surface varies according to season. In the winter when the water temperature drops a bit we are visited by the impressive Bull Sharks in Chumphon Pinnacles. I April-May its whale sharks that visit us. Even whales visit our dive sites on occasion. All year round you’ll see Banner fish, Angelfish, turtles, Barracuda, Stingrays, Triggerfish, Clownfish, so you’ll never run out of new species to watch and enjoy!

The Titan Triggerfish is the bulldog of the sea, an impressive sight. A triggerfish will often be up for a bit of a fight. This is a fish that most divers prefer to observe from a small distance.

An Angelfish is a unique fish. Angelfish always appear in couples and it is considered a fact that they mate for life. One thing is for sure their color and shape is a beautiful sight under water.

Big shoals of Jackfish are a normal sight as soon as you move away from Chumphon or Southwest Pinnacles.

Batfish is a curious species, which often approach divers to inspect us close, no doubt. Batfish can be seen in many dive sites around Koh Tao.

The little Yellow Boxfish with its little black dots is one of the cutest thing on the reef and is often seen bobbing around I small crevasses and among the coral on our many dive sites.

Turtles we see almost daily on White Rock, both when they are swimming around and eat off the corals, swim to the surface for a breath or when they just chill under a rock out cropping.
